Forgiveness VS Getting Even

The Problem With Getting Even-

1 Peter 3:9 New International Version (NIV)
9 Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.

Matthew 5:38-39
38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.

The Problem With getting even is that half the time the person who commited an offense to you doesn’t even know they have done it. I’ve witnessed and experienced this.. as the one dishing it out and as the one on the receiving end. The word says “watch out lest you destroy eachother”. Jesus himself prayed to God as he hung bruised, beaten and wrongfully accused. He was getting ready to breath his last breath and he prayed to God “Father forgive them, they know not what they do”. So when we are sitting there feeling hurt or angry I will tell you first of all that its ok to feel hurt. You are not in sin for feeling hurt but only one can truly fix that hurt. Talk to God about it. Then try to forgive that person as God gives you grace to because when that person hurts you it is probably either out of ignorance, that they don’t really see how they are hurting you, or they have their own issues. Hurting people hurt people. We are unable to fix people however we can be an example to them of what it means to love and how to live. By our actions of doing good we are heaping hot coals on that person’s head and it will go much further in making them feel ashamed.. or maybe even loved because love is what we truly need and a lack of it makes us do things.

So if a person doesnt understand what they’ve done to upset you, then your act of getting even with them could actually burn into their hearts as the time they were injured by you. It won’t win them, it will destroy them and does no one any good. Something to think about.
